I am originally from South Sudan but migrated to Australia almost 16 years ago. I have a Bachelor’s degree in science and would love to combine science with health promotion and community development.

• What inspired you to become a Hepatitis Victoria Volunteer?

What inspired me to become a Hepatitis Victoria volunteer is my love of science and wanting to help communities such as my own (South Sudanese). In my community hepatitis has always been a taboo subject and combined with my love of science, I was curious to learn more about hepatitis. I wanted to take part in health promotion activities and research about hepatitis in the Sudanese community so that I can help educate others about a topic that should be discussed.

• One of your favourite Victoria Sessions or moments

Some of my favourite Hepatitis Victoria sessions have been going to Lunar Festivals, universities, and summits. The African Diaspora Women Summit in particular was one of my favourites because of two aspects. The first is that it was rewarding when people came to our booth and I got to share what I’ve been learning since volunteering at Hepatitis Victoria. The second aspect was listening to guest speakers who were inspiring. It was inspiring hearing stories of heroic women who have faced enormous obstacles in their lives, yet despite that, they still conquered it and became very successful.  The day was both rewarding and inspirational.

• What tips do you have for new volunteers?

Have fun and don’t worry if you don’t know how to do something the first day, because over time you will see growth.
